Beautiful Slovenia

sunny 20 °C

Neither of us knew anything about Slovenia, except that we needed to drive through it to reach our next destination Croatia.

As soon as we crossed the border from Italy though, we fell in love with the place. It was quieter, more relaxed and laid back that what we had been experiencing.

Our first stop was the Julian Alps, so of course we ended up getting back on the bikes and went for an amazing ride over the mountains and along the Soca river, which was the most piercing turquoise you could imagine.

It then really was time for a break, so we headed for Lake Bohinj in the heart of Slovenia for a couple of relaxing days. It was tough, waking up each morning to the sounds of the lake lapping the shore just outside our campervan but we managed it. We timed our stay there perfectly as the campsite bar was showing the Euro 2008, so we could finally get our long awaited football fix.

The highlight of our stay here though was without doubt a stop over in Ljubljiana (the capital), or rather the Saturday food market. We stocked up on loads of fresh stuff and treated ourselves to an amazing fish feast at one of the market stalls, we were in heaven!

We had planned to drive straight to Croatia, but we forgot that every journey in Fernando seems to take at least twice as long as we anticipate. It’s very slow work going up hills, round bendy roads and through local villages. We were really glad we spent one more night in Slovenia though as we got out for a beautiful Sunday morning ride through the local villages. We left our obligatory morning café stop, just as the men were getting into their Sunday drinking whilst the women of the households were off to church.
